Collective exhibition (IN)VISIBILITÉ OSTENTATOIRE

(IN)VISIBILITÉ OSTENTATOIRE

This catalog is published by the Fondation Clément on the occasion of the exhibition “(In)visibilité ostentatoire” from July 7 to August 30, 2017.

The exhibition Conspicuous (In)visibility, in reference to the deafening silences of History, presents the work of eleven artists who explore what is left unsaid about events past and present, or which the memory has forgotten or chosen to forget. By relating certain historical events that were subjected to silence at the time, it evokes the mechanisms at work, the collective amnesia and social taboos that influence our choices and our silences. Conspicuous (In)visibility also reveals the work of some artists who draw inspiration from the Invisible world, the world of the “mistè” (spirits) that seem to pull the strings in Haitian reality. This invisible world and its cohort of popular beliefs is a source of inspiration for many of them. The exhibition explores the “conspicuous invisibility” of Haiti at major international events, emphasising the visibility of what should have been evident.
