Publication 101 MONUMENTS HISTORIQUES MARTINIQUE
101 MONUMENTS HISTORIQUES MARTINIQUE
Commemorating a twin anniversary, this book features a photographic essay by Jean-Baptiste Barret accompanied by texts penned by heritage experts Marc Botlan, Danielle Bégot and Jeanne Cazassus-Bérard.
In 1913, France introduced a piece of innovative legislation to preserve its built heritage and, in 1973, the Schœlcher Library and Fort Saint-Louis became the first listed monuments in Martinique.
The inventory of these 40 years of protection paints a portrait of the diversity of the buildings inscribed and classified as well as of the changing perspective the Martinicans have had on their own heritage.
Published by HC Editions on the initiative of Martinique’s Cultural Affairs Department and the Clément Foundation, this publication pays tributes to all those who have made some contribution to protecting, embellishing and promoting these sites and invites the reader to discover from a fresh angle these treasured monuments that have become part of the everyday landscape.
Publication available in libraries, at the Habitation Clément gift shop and on the HC Editions website: hc-editions.com
