Practical information

Shirley Ruffin’s work is based on the perception of the body and more specifically on the question of the taboo of nudity in the postcolonial society of Martinique.

Shirley Ruffin uses the photographic image as a gateway to manipulate the real. Through a chemical process which alters the image, she decomposes and composes representations of readable and abstract body fragments. She intends to show a sensitive image and not a representative image of the body.

A young visual artist, Shirley uses photography not as a means of representation but as an artistic material. At 30 years old, she has already taken part in large collective exhibitions in the Caribbean, such as Caribe Expandido in 2011, Horizons Insulaires in 2011, in the Canary Islands, in the Dominican Republic, in Cuba, in 2013, and in the BIAC (a contemporary art show which takes place every two years) in Martinique. For the first time, a solo exhibition has been devoted to her in Martinique by the Fondation Clément.
