Practical information

Jorge Pineda was born in the Dominican Republic in 1961. He lives between Santo Domingo and Madrid.

This exhibition, presented by Pineda, is composed of sculptures and drawings. Several drawings –  made with a colour Bic biro, lead pencil and water colour – on different media, of different sizes and using different techniques. The drawings are the result of an investigation into the issues and concepts that have informed his work for some ten years. They are also notes for projects that have already been completed or are planned for the future. They are independent of one another and give the impression of a kind of inventory, a labyrinth with no specific order. As the artist puts it, it is “a way of building my own Tower of Babel, as J.L. Borges proposed.”

The artist also puts forward a proposal for the Afro-Issues project, with two wooden sculptures in particular, adolescent figures positioned to face a wall. The theme of this project is powerlessness, violence and the problematics of self-punishment and conformity. On this same wall, freehand drawings reflect the anger or powerlessness of these young people.
