Practical information

Abel Barroso lives and works in Havana. A Cuban artist of the 90’s generation, he studied at the Institut Supérieur d’Art in Havana (Higher Art Institute).

His work is now known on the international arts scene (China, Japan, the USA, Europe). His work, based on drawings and xylography, offers a critical vision of the accumulation of the world’s wealth and the relationships between developed countries and the Third World. Abel Barroso restores modernity to engraving which becomes, in his sculptures and installations, a starting point for three-dimensional work. His works are reminiscent of old wooden toys, models that take us back to the objects of our childhood.

In the “An Island abroad” exhibition Abel Barroso presents drawings and small wooden sculptures realised through the process of xylography, in the form of a board game. This exhibition offers a reflection on the conditions of insularity with regard to tourism and the growing divisions that exist between autochthones of  the Caribbean, tourists and those who decide to leave their island in search of a visa. All these themes are very present in the life of Cuban people, and Abel Barroso, with visual grammar close to children’s drawings, translates this space of social life with humour.
