In the island world of Martinique, the inland areas of Fonds-Saint-Denis, Morne-Rouge and L’Ajoupa-Bouillon represent a territory all of its own, between a reliance on the coastline and distance, where the cultural landscape is inscribed into a spectacular natural realm.

The ultimate rural land, the “péyi” (land) of the volcano has preserved a strong cultural identity, often forged from adversity, which is represented in a heritage that resonates in multiple ways.

Jeanne Cazassus-Bérard is an independent researcher associated with the EA 929 AIHP-GEODE. Her recent work relates to the colonial archaeology of Martinique and the urban history of Saint-Pierre.
